Maintenance and Repair

Regular care of your Dreadlocks can help them to form up quicker and keep them looking neat while they go through the maturation process. It also helps to keep mature dreadlocks looking neat. New root growth and loose fuzzy hairs will be pulled into your locks, tidying and securing them. A crochet hook is used for maintenance work. There is no wax involved or any type of looping of the dreadlock back through itself.

I can just pull in the new growth for you or I can work down the entire dread. Lumps and bumps can be smoothed out or pulled in as well, before your dreads get too set in their ways, or we can leave them alone if you prefer. If you have open or natural ended dreads I can blunt or round them off at your maintenance session too. Some folks like their dreads to look very neat and tidy, others go for a more natural relaxed approach to their dreads…there is no right or wrong here its a personal choice.

People often ask how often will they need maintenance. It really depends on you, your hair type and the age of your dreads. It could be monthly, a few times per year or longer. How long it takes depends on all these factors too but on average 2 hours. It can take up to 4 hours or longer if things are out of control…….

Other repairs that can be done on dreads are separating joined dreads and resizing very large or very small dreads. Have you had a dread break off ? – generally they can be reattached. Other issues related to sectioning or dread placement can be resolved as well so please ask. If your dreads were made the free form way and need an overhaul get in touch – I am happy to help.

While you’re having maintenance done its a great time to get some colourful wraps too!

Wax in dreadlocks? Noooooooo!

Firstly let me tell you that I do not use any wax when I make or maintain dreadlocks.

One of the idea’s behind wax in dreadlocks is to help them form. This method was and is still used by some to create dreads, the hair is backcombed and wax rolled in to hold the hair into position. Palm rolling and the regular application of more wax is required.

Unfortunately the wax attracts other things to it as it is sticky! Dust, lint, you name it. It also tends to get left behind on anything you lean on…the couch, your pillow, your partner! The use of wax can also trap moisture in your dreads and prevent them drying sufficiently. If your dreads stay damp for extended periods of time they can get mouldy!

If your dreads were made with wax I can offer suggestions to help you remove it. Don’t worry it is possible! If you are coming to see me for maintenance please let me know prior to your appointment so we can discuss wax removal and get the best results in maintaining your dreads.
